46256, Crewe, 26th September 1964
The last surviving LMS "Princess Coronation" class 4-6-2 No. 46256 "Sir William A Stanier FRS" stands at Crewe station at the head of the RCTS "Scottish Lowlander Railtour", which it worked to Carlisle. There, LNER A4 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" took over for the run via the Waverley route to Edinburgh and was itself replaced by 60009 "Union of South Africa". This engine worked the train to Glasgow and via Kilmarnock back to Carlisle where 46256 took over once again for the run back to Crewe. On arrival back at Crewe the engine was withdrawn from service and so passed the era of the Stanier Pacifics. Saturday 26th September 1964. Slide No. 1057.
