After departing from Carlisle Citadel a few minutes early, the RCTS "Scottish Lowlander" railtour, now headed by A4 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley", was wrongly routed onto the main line to Glasgow at Port Carlisle Branch Junction. The train ground to a standstill and after a short delay was reversed until clear of the junction and then restarted on the correct route, seen here. This resulted in a loss of some thirteen minutes (it would probably have taken hours to sort out these days!), which encouraged the engine crew to go "all-out", producing a record run to Whitrope Summit on the Waverley route with 450 tons behind the tender. Hawick was reached with the train back on time... Saturday 26th September 1964. Slide No. 1064.
