34101, Eastleigh, 9th May 1964
Rebuilt Bulleid "West Country" Class 4-6-2 No. 34101 "Hartland" has just set off from Eastleigh station with an up Bournemouth express to Waterloo, seen from a passing train heading towards Eastleigh. Saturday 9th May 1964. 34101 was built at Eastleigh Works, entering service from February 1950, based at Stewarts Lane depot until it returned to Eastleigh for rebuilding in September 1960. It went back to Stewarts Lane for a short while before moving on to Bricklayer's Arms for just over a year, then spent another year or so based at Brighton shed until mid-1963, then moving again to Nine Elms until late 1964, so a Nine Elms engine at the time of the photo. Its final re-allocation was to Eastleigh, from where it was withdrawn in July 1966 and stored there until October 1966 when it went to Woodham's Yard in Barry, South Wales. There it languished with many other locos until July 1978 when it was sold for preservation, moving to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for restoration to working order. Slide No. 646.
