London Transport Steam
June 2011 marked 40 years since the end of steam traction on London Transport, the last steam-hauled train running on Sunday 6th June 1971. This also marked the end of regular steam running on "main lines" in the UK, almost three years after the end of steam on BR, though some steam had also continued for a while in Northern Ireland. Photos of some of the daylight operations from the mid - 1960s until the last day. Most are taken with my Voigtländer Vito CLR Camera, later ones with my first SLR, a Pentax S1a. Metropolitan Railway E class 0-4-4T No. 1 heads a train towards Chesham, passing the sidings south of Rickmansworrth station, with stabled A60 stock alongside. This was during the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Chesham branch, 1889 - 1989 and shuttle trains ran with No. 1 and Met Electric loco No. 12 "Sarah Siddons" topping and tailing the trains between Watford and Chesham. GWR large Pannier 0-6-0PT No. 9466 was also involved in these runs. This was on the second weekend of celebratory runs, Saturday 8th July 1989. Slide No. 20071.
