London Transport Steam
June 2011 marked 40 years since the end of steam traction on London Transport, the last steam-hauled train running on Sunday 6th June 1971. This also marked the end of regular steam running on "main lines" in the UK, almost three years after the end of steam on BR, though some steam had also continued for a while in Northern Ireland. Photos of some of the daylight operations from the mid - 1960s until the last day. Most are taken with my Voigtländer Vito CLR Camera, later ones with my first SLR, a Pentax S1a. Met No. 12, Neasden, 6th June 1971
Metropolitan Railway Electric loco No. 12 "Sarah Siddons" (named after the actress) on display at Neasden depot during the ceremonials to mark the end of steam running on the Underground, Sunday 6th June 1971. The locomotive survived as it was used as a "Brake Block Test Loco". The signals in the background protect Neasden South Junction, operated from Neasden South signalbox, on the former Great Central Railway route into Marylebone. Slide No. 7081.
