W33 "Bembridge", near Shanklin, 29th August 1964.
A rather dirty unidentified O2 0-4-4T, carrying duty board No. 6, is hard at work near Upper Hyde soon after departing from Shanklin on the climb towards Wroxall with a train from Ryde Pier Head to Ventnor on Saturday 29th August 1964. With sunshine on part of the cutting but the track in deep shadow, this was quite a difficult shot to get! Slide No. 1006. I have now been informed by John Faulkner that the loco is W33 "Bembridge" as this was the only engine on the system that had two stiffeners across the cab roof, all the others having just a single central stiffener. W33 was also one of only three locos that had no cab roof ventilator, the others being W35 and W36. Thanks to John for passing-on such in-depth knowledge!
