044 240-0, Emden Rbf, 2nd October 1972
On Monday 2nd October 1972 at 11:10, a southbound iron ore train sets off from the yard at Emden. The cloud of black smoke is from the coal-fired 3 cylinder 2-10-0 No. 044 240-0 as it struggles to get its train on the move. These trains were often double-headed by pairs of 2-10-0s, so perhaps this was a lighter train than usual. These engines worked as far as the yards at Rheine, where electric traction took over for the rest of the run into the Ruhr industrial areas. Slide No. 10534.
