01 0529-6, Hönebach, 22nd January 1973
Train D453, the 15:28 departure from Bebra was the last steam-hauled train of the day eastbound and seemed to be regularly double-headed by two Class 01/5 Pacifics. Here 01 0529-6 is piloting 01 0526-2 as the 11-coach train nears the border just before entering Hönebach tunnel, though border formalities were carried out at Eisenach, a little way further on. The leading engine catches the last of the afternoon sunshine as the pair storm up the gradient on Monday 22nd January 1973. I was now faced with a 10Km walk back to my hotel in Bebra! Slide No. 10693.
