SR Bulleid rebuilt "Merchant Navy" Class 4-6-2 No. 35023 "Holland - Afrika Line" has the road and is raring to go, but the water column "bag" is still in the tender, replenishing the water supply as it waits to leave Southampton Central station with the down "Bournemouth Belle" from Waterloo. A friend and I had travelled down from Waterloo and enjoyed a splendid lunch (we were 15 years old at the time!) but couldn't afford to travel any further at Pullman rates! Note the dockyard cranes in the background, the large funnel just visible on the left above the driver's greasetop cap belongs to RMS "Queen Elizabeth" then still in service. Tuesday 27th October 1964. Slide No. 1102.
