31522, Eastleigh, 2nd February 1963
SE&CR Wainwright Class H 0-4-4T, built from 1904 at Ashford Works, No. 31522 has reached the end of the line on the scrap road at Eastleigh Works and stripping has just commenced. This was one of the locos fitted with Autotrain "Push-Pull" equipment from 1949. One member of the class, No. 31263, survived into preservation. 31522 was withdrawn from Tunbridge Wells West shed in January 1963 and arrived at Eastleigh later the same month and was scrapped during February 1963. Behind is an unidentified Class Z 0-8-0T, possibly No. 30954, also in the early stages of stripping for scrap. These locos had been mainly used on trip workings around south London and for banking trains between Exeter St. David's and Exeter Central, up the 1 in 37 graded line. Saturday 2nd February 1963. B&W Neg No. 276.
