34051 "Winston Churchill", Basingstoke, 22nd May 1965
A nicely cleaned-up unrebuilt "Battle of Britain" Class 4-6-2, No. 34051 "Winston Churchill", has arrived at Basingstoke station with a down mixed goods train which it has worked from Nine Elms. It has caused quite a stir amongst the local enthusiasts as a clean engine was fairly rare by this time! The engine came off the train here and was replaced by a Standard Class 4 4-6-0, while 34051 went on shed. It later worked light engine to Birmingham to work a railtour the following day, presumably the reason it was so clean! Saturday 22nd May 1965. Slide No. 1320.
