77s, with Geoff, Barry & Keith Plumb, Southampton Town Quay, 14th June 1958
From the Geoff Plumb Collection. From left to right, Geoff, Barry & Keith Plumb pose with C14 Class 0-4-0T No. 77s between its duties shunting at Southampton Town Quay (Queen's Quay), Saturday 14th June 1958. The loco was rebuilt in 1918 from an earlier 2-2-0T built in 1906 by Drummond, so not as ancient as it looks! It was resident shunter at the Redbridge Sleeper Works for many years but when classmates 30588 and 30589 were withdrawn in 1957 (December and June respectively) and replaced by diesel power in the docks (Drewry No. 11223), clearance problems were immediately apparent. So 77s was borrowed from Redbridge and worked on the dock intermittently for lengthy periods between December 1957 and 10th February 1959. Drewry No. 11224, which had cutback footsteps to aid clearances, became available from 12th January 1959, but a manning dispute meant 77s doing the honours for a short while once more. It was withdrawn from service on 21st March 1959 and scrapped at Eastleigh Works on 2nd May 1959. Photo by Derek Plumb. Thanks to Mike Morant and Guy Cooper for extra information!
