General View, Bog Hall Signal Box, Whitby, August 1970
General view overlooking Bog Hall in Whitby on a day when the sea fret was hiding much of the background! Bog Hall was the first signalbox out from Whitby and controlled the junction up to West Cliff, disused by this time. In this picture the 'box is switched out, with its signals in the "off" position. The goods yard was still in use at this time, though it looks like the weighbridge for coal traffic has been removed. Also removed is the connection to the turntable, only the pit remaining. The scene is much changed today, though three tracks still exist at this point, used as a run round loop for trains from the NYMR. The crossing is still in use though only for pedestrians and the wall alongside the parked cars is still there too. The signalbox is long gone and the yard area, together with the near part of the river, has been become a car park and marina after land reclamation work. August 1970. Slide No. 5398.
