Former LMS Lines
58148, "Glenfield Goods", 26th June 1962
From the Geoff Plumb Collection of original slides. Former Midland Railway 2F 0-6-0 No. 58148 has just emerged from the west end of Glenfield Tunnel and is approaching the station area (closed to passengers in 1928) with the Leicester West Bridge to Desford goods train (the "Glenfield Goods") on Tuesday 26th June 1962. This class of loco was one of the few able to fit through the tunnel which ensured the survival of a few examples until a couple of BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0s were "cut-down" to fit, replacing the 2Fs by 1964 - and the line was closed in 1966. This was part of the Leicester and Swannington Railway, one of the earliest lines built in the country, opening in 1832. Photo by D.E. White. Collect Slide No. 29367.
