W.T.Co. No.5 "Shannon", Wantage Road Station, 23rd September 1962
Wantage Tramway 0-4-0WT No. 5 "Shannon" (George England, 1857), originally at the Sandy & Potton Railway, was bought by the L&NWR in 1862 and named in 1872. She was sold to the Wantage Tramway in 1878 where she became known as "Jane". Purchased by the GWR the name "Shannon" was re-applied and the engine plinthed on the down platform at Wantage Road station from April 1948 for some time after the tramway closed in December 1945. The station itself was closed eventually on 7th December 1964 and the loco was stored but put back into working order in 1969, becoming one of the oldest operational steam engines. Sunday 23rd September 1962. My younger brother Barry stands by the station waiting shelter whilst my father Derek is at the bottom of the footbridge steps. B&W Neg. No.193.
