6000 'King George V', Return To Steam special, Milton, 7th October 1971
GWR 'King' Class 4-6-0 No. 6000 'King George V' is at the head of the Bulmer's Cider train of Pullman coaches, forming Stage 3 of the 'Return to Steam' specials run in early October 1971. This ran from Kensington Olympia (depart 10:43) to Swindon, with stops at Reading and Didcot. Soon after departing Didcot at 12:23, the train is seen from Milton Bridge as it heads west. In the background is Didcot 'A' Power Station, which came on stream in 1970, built on part of the site of the MoD Central Ordnance Depot. This had an extensive rail system, part of which can be seen to the left of the picture, below the cooling towers. Thursday 7th October 1971. Slide No. 7968.
