The standard gauge tunnel from the yard at Wirksworth station was opened in November 1877 to serve the Dale Quarry (known as the "Big Hole") and ran under the town to the quarry. The quarry closed in 1968 and latterly the tunnel was used by lorries running on deepened ballast and controlled by traffic lights. Even with lighting throughout it must have been an interesting drive! The EVRA have now laid a narrow gauge line up to teh tunnel portal. Tuesday 30th April 2013. Digital Image No. GMPI15232.
