The NYMR Royal opening special train stands on the junction between the BR line from Middlesbrough to Whitby and the NYMR itself at Grosmont, prior to moving into the platform to pick up the train's passengers, including HRH The Duchess of Kent. The train is double-headed by immaculate P3 class 0-6-0 (LNER & BR class J27) No. 2392 and LH&JCR 0-6-2T No. 29. It was originally intended that this train would start from Whitby, but a national rail strike that day put paid to that idea! Note the rusty rails of the main line in the foreground left, though the double track from here to Whitby was in the process of being singled at the time, the far left track already out of use and severed. Tuesday 1st May 1973, a beautiful Spring day. Slide No. 11034.
