Preserved A3 Class 4-6-2 No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" (at that time owned by Alan Pegler) is in charge of the "RCTS East Midlander No. 8" railtour from Nottingham to Eastleigh and Swindon Works. It is seen passing through Gladstone Park near Dudding Hill, on the line from Cricklewood to Acton Wells Junction. Saturday 29th May 1965. Slide No. 1341.
LNER Class K1 2-6-0 No. 2005 ran a series of shuttle trains from Whitby to Battersby in July 1975. After returning to Whitby, the engine has run round its train which it is now propelling back into the station near Bog Hall. St Mary's church and the Abbey dominate the skyline on the east cliff, as they do to this day, but the area between the railway and the River Esk is now built up with a supermarket, car parks and a larger marina. July 1975. The railway is now very basic at Whitby, though run-round facilities do still exist. Slide No. 13286.
Having run-round its train outside the station, K1 2-6-0 No. 2005 then propelled it back into Whitby station and posed alongside the signalbox. When the railway was “rationalized” here, the signalbox was demolished and parts were used to build the new signalbox at Grosmont on the NYMR. The goods shed alongside the signalbox was also demolished and a supermarket was built on the site, leaving only one platform operational. St Mary's Church and the ruins of the Abbey can be seen perched on the East Cliff. July 1975. Slide No. 13288.
GWR "King" Class 4-6-0 No. 6000 "King George V" is westbound on the down relief line as it passes under Southbury Lane bridge approaching Twyford on the GWML. It is hauling a special to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Paddington station and at that time this was a rare steam run. The train was steam-hauled to Didcot and the loco was supposed to work the return as well, however, the loco ran a hot box and a diesel substituted for the return run. Thursday 1st March 1979. Slide No. 14450.
LMS Stanier "Princess Coronation" Class 4-6-2 No. 46229 "Duchess of Hamilton" stands in the centre road at Carlisle Citadel station alongside an unidentified "Peak" Class 45 diesel. The "Duchess" was about to work a southbound "Cumbrian Mountain Express" over the Settle & Carlisle line as far as Hellifield, Saturday 8th November 1980.
LMS Stanier "Princess Royal" class 4-6-2 No. 6201 "Princess Elizabeth" at Shrewsbury, shunting its support coach prior to departing south with the "Welsh Marches Express" which it worked to Hereford where "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 5000 took over for the continuation to Newport. Saturday 7th March 1981. Slide No. 15315.
LMS "Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 5407 arrived in Scarborough with the "Scarborough Spa Express", 09:50 from York, and is now being turned on the then fairly new turntable before returning to York at 12:22. The castle can be seen in the left background, standing on the headland between the north and south bays. Tuesday 18th August 1981. Slide No. 15494.
BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92220 returns to its depot at Bulmer's Cider Centre in Hereford after duties hauling the "Welsh Marches Express" on Saturday 24th April 1982. Slide No. 15678.
"Black 5" 4-6-0 No. 5305 emerges from under the train shed at York station as it gets under way with the "Scarborough Spa Express", initially bound for Leeds via Harrogate. Due to depart at 08:45, it was running 45 minutes late as the loco needed to be turned for the duty. The train ran several days a week during the summer as a joint venture between BR and Scarborough Council and was a very good day out and excellent value for money! It ran from York - Harrogate - Leeds - York - Scarborough - York - Leeds - Harrogate - York, finally due back in York at 21:23. Sunday 26th August 1984. Slide No. 16537.
